Zoom connection details will be emailed to you upon registration. Please note that the Zoom link will be the same for both events and you only need to register once.
Part 1: Electoral democracy data for all: Disciplinary sharing and reuse of public opinion research
Thursday, February 15, 2024 - 1:00 P.M - 2:30 P.M.
In line with this year's Love Data Week theme, this session will highlight data research initiatives investigating the intersections between government data, race, gender, and community in Canada, as well as innovations and challenges surrounding data collection, dissemination, archiving, and access. With a specific focus on public opinion and election data, the session will feature a panel presentation with Dr. Elizabeth Goodyear-Grant, Dr. Allison Harell, and Dr. Fan Lu on their own research projects and priorities in relation to open social science data, as well as an audience Q&A.
Presenters:
Dr. Elizabeth Goodyear-Grant (PhD McGill) is a Professor in the Department of Political Studies at Queen’s University and the Director of the Canadian Opinion Research Archive (CORA). CORA makes available commercial and independent surveys to the academic, research, and journalistic communities and is involved in promoting and sponsoring events that encourage advancements in the study of public opinion, both substantively and methodologically. Elizabeth's research focuses on Canadian politics with particular interests in elections and voting behaviour, public opinion research, the political representation of women, and the conceptualization and measurement of sex and gender.
Dr. Allison Harell (PhD McGill) is a Professor in the Department of Political Science (Département de science politique) at the Université du Québec à Montréal, as well as the Co-Director of the Consortium on Electoral Democracy / Consortium de la démocratie électorale (C-DEM). C-DEM is a cross-Canada election research network with a focus on political engagement, Canadian public opinion, and collaborative, evidence-based data collection practices. Allison's primary fields of study include elections and political behaviour, gender, citizenship and immigration, and public opinion research.
Dr. Fan Lu (PhD University of California, Davis) is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Studies at Queen's University. Her primary fields of study are American Politics, Racial Politics, Immigration, and Quantitative Methods. She works with a combination of individual and aggregate level data, with plans to extend the study of racial politics beyond the United States.
Part 2: Learn with Odesi - Data Democracy
Friday, February 16, 2024 - 1:00 P.M. - 2:00 P.M.
This session will focus on democratic data in Odesi. Odesi has a comprehensive collection of Canadian Public Opinion Polls (POP), spanning over 60 years and covering every region, province, and territory. Odesi’s POP collections cover historical and current public opinion data, including political and social attitudes about anything from political figures like Justin Trudeau, to drones, housing, or climate change. This session will provide a behind the scenes look at Odesi best practices for data deposit, curation, and preservation of public opinion research data, as well as how to search, share, and reuse data in Odesi. Join us to learn how Odesi’s extensive POP collections support accessible, equitable, and democratic research data initiatives in Canada. We will also be launching updated documentation regarding data deposit and metadata best practices, as well as providing an update on structural developments to the new Odesi site since the migration back in October - in particular ongoing work building a new Data Curation and Data Explorer tool.

We look forward to celebrating Love Data Week with you!
